History

Alphalyse was founded by and is owned by Thomas Kofoed and Ejvind Mørtz, following a management buyout in 2005. As a contract research organization, the company has specialized in performing protein analyses for European and American pharmaceutical companies.

After a tough beginning as a start-up financed by loans and maxed-out credit, Alphalyse has found a unique identity and developed strong competencies. With support from the Danish Innovation Fund, they have developed new methods for measuring impurities in biological drugs using highly specialized instruments. This approach is groundbreaking in the industry.

With additional capital, knowledge and technology were expanded. By 2018, Alphalyse was the most experienced laboratory in the world at performing analysis of host cell proteins using mass spectrometry. Alphalyse’s method stands out; it not only measures the total amount of impurities in biopharmaceutical drugs but can also identify individual impurities. This level of detail gives clients a new tool for purifying their drug products, making them safer and more effective. Alphalyse is the only CRO on the market offering this service.

In 2020, Alphalyse moved to new and modern facilities in the center of Odense. Although space soon became tight again due to a quickly increasing number of employees, 2022 saw the company become the world’s first GMP-validated (Good Manufacturing Practice) contract laboratory specializing in measuring drug clearance of host cell proteins. The certification from the Danish Medicines Agency significantly boosted the company’s growth.

Alphalyse today

Today, Alphalyse employs 32 skilled specialists, of which the majority hold Ph.D. degrees. The high level of education contributes to a strong company profile and provides a unique collection of expertise. Thanks to a close collaboration with the University of Southern Denmark, Alphalyse also contributes to research and education in protein science.

Alphalyse is Born Global with a subsidiary in the USA. From the beginning, the company focused on international clients and has conducted over 100,000 analyses for prominent pharmaceutical companies and universities worldwide. Clients’ satisfaction with the company’s extensive expertise and personalized service is reflected in an NPS score of 65.

There is no doubt that Thomas, Ejvind, and Alphalyse are facing exciting times – both Christian Hørlüch from Danske Bank and I look forward to following their further development. We will know how they do in this year’s competition on October 24, 2023.
